Investigators Probe New Potential Ransom Note in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday that investigators are examining a “new possible ransom note” in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. The department and the FBI’s Guthrie Task Force were recently made aware of the document.

Investigators are also aware of social media discussions surrounding the note and are working to determine its credibility, the sheriff’s department stated in a release.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her home in the Catalina Foothills, Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. Multiple ransom notes were subsequently sent to news outlets. The first note, received by TMZ on February 2, reportedly demanded cryptocurrency payments in the millions and mentioned specific deadlines in early February. It also stated that Guthrie was “safe but scared” and noted she had a smartwatch on her person.

A second note, sent on February 6, claimed that Guthrie had died, attributing her death to a heart-related incident shortly after her abduction. This note expressed sorrow and suggested she was “buried in nature.”

In August, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos explained that authorities had released the initial ransom notes to the public in hopes of eliciting a response from the community. He stated that investigators believed information within the notes might prompt someone to recognize the language or writing style, potentially leading to a breakthrough.

Savannah Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie’s daughter and a co-anchor on NBC’s “Today” show, has publicly appealed for information. In March, she expressed belief in the authenticity of the two initial ransom notes. Savannah and her siblings have offered a $1 million reward for information leading to their mother’s safe return. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
