Investigators Closer to Identifying Man Who Self-Immolated on California Beach Six Years Ago
New details emerge in the 2020 Pescadero State Beach case, focusing on potential ancestry and personal items.
Investigators are making progress in identifying a man who died by self-immolation on Pescadero State Beach in California six years ago. The man's remains were discovered on July 24, 2020, after firefighters responded to reports of a large bonfire.
Authorities believe the man constructed the bonfire himself before setting himself on fire. The remote location of the beach and the circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many areas were under lockdown, have added to the complexity of the investigation.
Officials with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the nonprofit Wolf Pack DNA, have released new information in hopes of solving the six-year-old mystery. The deceased individual is estimated to have been between 30 and 65 years old. Investigators suspect he was of West Asian descent, potentially with ties to the Zoroastrian minority community in Tehran, Iran, or possibly from the eastern Mediterranean region. Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions, originated in Iran.
Several items were found near the man's remains, including size 34 black boots, a green duffle bag with a white metal key on a red keychain, a small Starlight Candle-brand tin candle, and a black headscarf marked with white dots and the letters 'GS.'
Despite these clues, the investigation faces challenges. The man's suspected ancestral background, potentially from an underrepresented group, has limited the effectiveness of genetic genealogy databases. Wolf Pack DNA is calling on individuals with ties to these populations to take DNA tests and upload their results to platforms like GEDmatch and DNA Justice. This public appeal aims to help identify the man, potentially reunite him with his family, and restore his name.
Diana Monnette, assistant director of Wolf Pack DNA, stated that information has been shared across social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook to reach anyone who might recognize the man or recall details about the incident. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office or the San Mateo County Coroner's Office. The Daily Mail has reached out to both offices and Wolf Pack DNA for comment.
