An investigation is underway into a fatal collision that occurred on a railway crossing in Burscough, West Lancashire, on Saturday afternoon. A train traveling from Southport to Manchester struck a supermarket delivery vehicle, resulting in the death of the van driver.

The incident took place around 3:00 PM GMT at a crossing off Martin Lane and Whitehouse Lane. Emergency services, including police vehicles, an ambulance, and a fire engine, were present at the scene.

Local residents have reportedly raised concerns that the crossing's gate is sometimes left open by users. These claims are being investigated by Network Rail, in conjunction with British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Board. Network Rail stated that it could not comment on the specific claims at this time but confirmed its involvement in the ongoing inquiry.

The crossing is described as not being a full level crossing, but one that is operated manually by users. It is equipped with lights and warning sounds that activate when the gate is not closed.

Witnesses on board the train described seeing the delivery van before the collision occurred. Images from the scene show damage to the train's driver's cab, including a door that had been sheered off its hinges. Image shows workmen in high visibility orange jackets climb up into the cab of a Northern train that is halted on a line next to an open field.

The investigation aims to determine the exact circumstances and cause of the crash, focusing on the operation and safety of the crossing.
