An intruder breached the set of NBC's "Today" show on Thursday morning, reportedly lunging at anchor Craig Melvin and hurling a racial slur, according to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. ET while the hosts were off the air. The suspect allegedly gained access to the studio through 30 Rock Plaza and, after initially asking for meteorologist Al Roker, turned toward Melvin.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the male suspect was detained and arrested. A photo obtained by TMZ appears to show Melvin surrounded by staffers in the studio immediately following the event.
Melvin returned to the air with his co-hosts later in the broadcast, not acknowledging the incident at the time. NBC News has not yet issued a public comment on the breach. The "Today" show is broadcast live from Rockefeller Center in New York City.
