Interior Design Experts Share Tips for Achieving 'The Traitors' Aesthetic at Home
Achieve the maximalist Gothic look of the show's Ardross Castle setting without a royal budget, according to design professionals.
Interior designers are offering insights into how homeowners can replicate the dramatic and opulent aesthetic of the castle featured in the reality competition series "The Traitors." Ardross Castle, located in the Scottish Highlands, has served as the backdrop for the show since 2022, with its interiors embodying a maximalist Gothic style that designers say can be emulated at home.
Milena Vallier, head of design at the online interior design service My Bespoke Room, suggests that achieving this look involves embracing bolder color choices, layering textures, incorporating patterns, and exploring second-hand markets for unique pieces. "As an interior designer, I'm captivated by the interiors of Ardross Castle and can't help but obsess over every chair, chandelier, and moody paint colour," Vallier stated.
Embracing Bold Colors and Textures
A key element of the castle's ambiance is its dark and moody color palette, featuring deep forest greens, navy blues, and rich burgundies. Vallier advises that dark colors can make a room feel more luxurious when used correctly. She recommends using a strong shade as an "anchor" for a room, even if it's just on a single feature wall or a piece of furniture. For those hesitant about committing to dark colors, she suggests experimenting in smaller or less-used spaces like a cloakroom or guest bedroom.
The "Traitors" aesthetic also relies heavily on diverse textures. Layering materials such as velvet armchairs, plaid cushions, and wooden paneling can create a sumptuous feel. Vallier notes that while individual statement pieces might be costly, combining various textures like velvet, leather, and wool adds depth and personality without necessarily breaking the bank.
Patterns, Lighting, and Unique Finds
Patterns play a significant role in enhancing the regal feel of the interiors. While plaid is a natural fit given the castle's Scottish heritage, patterns such as Damask and Persian-style rugs can also evoke a sense of history and grandeur.
Lighting is another crucial component. The show utilizes a mix of chandeliers, wall sconces, and table lamps with warm-toned bulbs to create ambiance. Vallier suggests recreating this layered lighting effect at home by combining statement pieces with softer, ambient lighting, rather than relying on a single bright overhead fixture. Using warm-toned bulbs and multiple light sources, along with candlelight, can contribute to a mysterious and intimate atmosphere.
To add character and avoid a generic look, designers recommend incorporating second-hand and vintage items. Flea markets and online marketplaces can be sources for quirky accessories and furniture, such as brass candlesticks, vintage mirrors, and old books, which lend charm and a sense of history to a space. "The real trick is to find pieces that have a history – or appear to at least – rather than filling a room with matching accessories," Vallier explained.
Creating a Statement Gallery Wall
Finally, the show's iconic portrait-filled dining room can inspire homeowners to create their own gallery walls. Instead of expensive oil paintings, Vallier suggests using a mix of contemporary prints, old family photographs, and even homemade artwork. Experimenting with frames found in charity shops or vintage markets can further enhance the personality and drama of the display.
Milenas tips are part of an effort to help homeowners achieve a sophisticated look without the need for a sprawling country estate or a substantial budget.
