A new interactive timeline developed by product designer Stefan Trkulja allows users to explore unexpected historical overlaps between famous figures and events. The tool, available online, reveals how individuals and occurrences from seemingly disparate eras were, in fact, contemporaries.
Among the most striking examples is the overlap between silent film icon Charlie Chaplin and rapper 50 Cent. Chaplin, born in 1889, died in 1977, just two years after the birth of Curtis James Jackson III (50 Cent) in 1975. This means the two were alive at the same time, despite belonging to vastly different cultural periods.
Another surprising artistic connection highlighted is the overlap between Cubist painter Pablo Picasso and rapper Eminem. Eminem, born in 1972, shared a one-year overlap with Picasso, who was born in 1881 and died in 1973. Picasso also lived to see the first mobile phone call, made just five days before his death in April 1973.
The tool also points to a fascinating overlap involving Helen Viola Jackson, identified as the last widow of an American Civil War veteran. Jackson was born in 1919 and lived until 2020, reaching the age of 101. Her extended lifespan meant she was alive during the births of contemporary artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa. Jackson married James Bolin, a 93-year-old Union Army veteran of the Civil War, at the age of 17.
Beyond personal timelines, the tool illustrates surprising historical proximities. For instance, Oxford University, with teaching beginning in 1096, is older than the Aztec Empire, which was founded in the early 14th century. The construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, completed around 2500 BC, predates the extinction of the woolly mammoth by over 1,000 years, as small populations of mammoths survived until approximately 1700 BC.
In a more modern, yet equally unexpected, juxtaposition, the last execution by guillotine in France occurred on September 10, 1977, after the US release of the film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope on May 25, 1977. The Nintendo Company, founded in 1889, shares its founding year with the completion of the Eiffel Tower.
