Injured UCLA Quarterback Nico Iamaleava Plans Return for 2027 Season

UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava intends to return to the team for the 2027 season, according to his agent, Joe Barnes. The decision comes as Iamaleava prepares for surgery to repair a torn knee ligament, with the procedure scheduled for next week and expected to be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Barnes stated that the expectation is for Iamaleava to be fully recovered by the start of fall training camp for the 2027 season. The quarterback's intention to return signals a commitment to UCLA rather than exploring the NFL draft or transferring to another institution.

Iamaleava's planned return follows a season limited to five games due to the knee injury. His agent indicated that the quarterback's role and compensation package for the 2027 season will be factors in his continued commitment, especially given the recovery from a significant injury.

The UCLA Bruins have performed well in Iamaleava's absence, with Ty Dieffenbach stepping in as quarterback. The team remains undefeated and ranked seventh nationally. Dieffenbach has led the Bruins to victories over Oregon, Wisconsin, and Oregon State since Iamaleava's injury.

Dieffenbach, who has at least one season of eligibility remaining, has presented the UCLA coaching staff with a decision for the 2027 season. The team must consider whether to continue with Dieffenbach, who has played effectively, or revert to Iamaleava, who possesses strong rushing abilities alongside his passing game, despite the uncertainty surrounding his post-injury performance.

Potential considerations for the coaching staff may also include evaluating transfer portal options and the development of Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother. Madden Iamaleava is currently Dieffenbach's backup and could emerge as a contender for the starting position by next summer.

Before his injury, Iamaleava completed 62.1% of his passes for 982 yards, with four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown in the five games he played. Dieffenbach has since completed 61.4% of his passes for 505 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, maintaining the Bruins' offensive momentum.

Iamaleava addressed his season-ending injury in an Instagram post, stating, "I gave this game and my brothers everything I had and I’ll continue to lean on God and trust His plan. I’ll be back." This statement aligns with his agent's announcement regarding his plan to return to UCLA in 2027.
