A number of progressive influencers have publicly defended Mayor Zohran Mamdani, admitting to their participation in a secret City Hall-organized group chat where they receive talking points from the administration. These influencers, who collectively reach millions of followers across various social media platforms, stated they are willing and happy to share information about the mayor's policies and initiatives.

Lisa Chin Mollica, who runs the Instagram account "Vote In Or Out" with over 1.1 million followers, confirmed her involvement. She described a regular, direct line of communication with City Hall's media team, which provides a "constant stream of information, events, policies," along with "background and access." Mollica stated that while she has never been paid by the administration, she is "genuinely happy to do it" and that the information helps her account inform New Yorkers about the administration's agenda.

Mollica's account has shared posts about Mamdani's administration, including coverage of a new AI policy for public schools. Critics have pointed to the content as appearing like press releases, with one commenter noting that while Mollica may not be directly paid, the "bias is very much real."

The existence of the "NYC Creators Announcement" Signal chat, reportedly involving nearly 200 influencers, was recently revealed, prompting plans for a City Council oversight hearing. Researchers from the Columbia Journalism Review found that some digital content creators have been paid by city agencies for outreach campaigns, though details on these contracts remain limited. Mamdani's team has largely defended the use of Signal and has not fully addressed inquiries about whether the group was activated to counter coverage of the chat's existence.

Other influencers have also spoken out. Cassie Willson, who has 314,000 followers on Instagram, posted a playful image of a mock $10,000 check, referencing payments from the Mamdani campaign, and praised the administration for its efforts to connect with creators. She stated that "a program or policy is only as good as the number of people who know about it." Willson also defended Mamdani following criticism for excluding an area from an immigrant enclave map, posting content that appeared to mock an Italian festival.

Ariana Afshar, who has 433,000 followers, claimed she "just covers the news" but also expressed her "genuine" support for Mamdani's administration. Miral Sattar, behind the book-focused Instagram account @miralreads with over 28,000 followers, acknowledged working with the administration, stating officials do not dictate her content and that she sometimes requests clips to cover specific topics. Sattar mentioned supporting Mamdani since his mayoral campaign, even canvassing for him when he had low poll numbers.

Megan Klink, host of the "Pretty Informed Girls" podcast, criticized what she called "legacy media" for what she described as inaccuracies, while praising the mayor's office for creating a "wonderful ecosystem of influencers and creators" that disseminates information which she claims legacy media does not cover. She specifically cited a lack of coverage on warming centers during a past cold front where fatalities occurred, despite extensive reporting by multiple news organizations at the time.
