Influencer Sparks Outrage Over Wedding Guest Dress Choice

Australian influencer Tahlia Skaines has ignited a debate about wedding etiquette after attending a friend's wedding in Greece wearing a striking, plunging lemon-yellow gown. The choice has led to accusations that Skaines, 31, upstaged the bride, a move considered a significant faux pas in wedding social circles.

Critics voiced their opinions on Skaines' Instagram posts from the event, with one commenter stating, "Literally outdid the bride!" Others, however, praised her appearance, calling her "magical."

This is not the first time Skaines has faced scrutiny for her wedding guest attire. In 2024, she wore a cream-colored, cutout gown to a wedding in Bali, which drew similar criticism online, with some deeming the outfit "tacky" and inappropriate. At the time, Skaines defended her choice, stating that guests were instructed to wear white and that the bride had approved of her dress.

The current situation revives the discussion about the boundaries of dressing stylishly as a wedding guest versus drawing undue attention. Fashion designer Amanda Perna, founder and creative director of The House of Perna, advised that guests should aim to be "memorable, but don’t become the event." This generally means avoiding any attire that could be mistaken for bridal wear, such as white dresses, dramatic trains, or elaborate lace, and steering clear of outfits that are excessively revealing or theatrical.

Perna suggested a simple test: "If someone posted a photo of you standing next to the bride, would anyone wonder which one of you was getting married? If the answer is yes, choose something else."

Etiquette expert Nick Leighton, co-host of the podcast "Were You Raised By Wolves?", offered a nuanced perspective. While guests should be mindful of the occasion and avoid intentionally upstaging the bride, they are also permitted to look their best. Leighton emphasized the importance of adhering to the dress code and any specific instructions provided on the wedding invitation.

"If Tahlia followed the invitation—both in letter and spirit—then she’s in the clear," Leighton stated.

The issue has resonated online, with similar dilemmas appearing in forums such as Reddit. One user shared an experience where their chosen outfit, a dove-gray saree that had been approved by the couple, still led to tension with the groom's mother and some bridal party members.

Stacy Stahl, co-founder of the wedding entertainment app Betting on the Wedding, noted that while guests naturally want to feel included, the distinction lies in whether the guest becomes the focal point. "The wrong kind of guest makes the day about her outfit," Stahl said. "The right kind makes the couple’s moments the whole show."
