Influencer Sparks Outrage for Riding Sea Turtle in Oman, Faces Legal Action

A fitness influencer has drawn widespread criticism and legal scrutiny after photos appeared to show him riding a sea turtle as it laid eggs on a beach in Oman. Vadym Oleynik, 32, and his partner Olena Kravchenko were photographed interacting with the turtle in the Ras al Hadd area, a known nesting site.

The images, which circulated widely online, reportedly showed the couple taking turns sitting on the turtle's shell and potentially handling hatchlings. Oleynik, who identifies as a world calisthenics champion and Master of Sport in combat sambo, has an online following of approximately 200,000 people.

Conservation groups were among the first to condemn the actions. The Italian conservation project Biologicamente criticized the behavior as exploitative and abusive, questioning the supervision of volunteers who were allegedly present. The organization stated that such actions were "disgusting and unpleasant" and were not representative of genuine volunteering.

Oman's Environment Authority has since confirmed that Oleynik's conduct violated laws designed to protect wildlife. The authority announced that it has initiated legal proceedings against Oleynik in accordance with applicable legislation and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing harm to wildlife and their habitats.

Reports suggested that Oleynik and Kravchenko may have been detained by police, although this has not been officially confirmed. Oleynik has since issued an apology, claiming he was misled and did not intend to harm the turtle. He stated, "I didn't see the rules. I made a mistake and apologize to everyone."

Despite the controversy, Oleynik has reportedly continued to post content from his holiday. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of wildlife conservation and the impact of social media on behavior in natural environments.
