Influencer's Carry-On Dispute Sparks Debate on Flight Attendant Duties

A recent incident involving a pregnant influencer and a flight attendant's refusal to assist with a carry-on bag has prompted a widespread online discussion about airline policies and passenger expectations.

Dominique Elissa, a social media influencer, shared her experience on the "Big Small Talk" podcast on Oct. 7. She recounted asking a male flight attendant to place her nearly nine-pound bag into an overhead bin, explaining that she was pregnant and had been advised not to lift heavy items herself. The flight attendant declined the request, stating that if Elissa could not place the bag there herself, it would need to be checked. The airline involved in the incident was not identified.

"I was just so shocked," Elissa said on the podcast, adding, "I feel this lack of respect for pregnant women at the moment."

Another passenger eventually intervened and helped Elissa with her luggage. She later told Fox News Digital that while she doesn't expect special treatment, she was taken aback by the refusal.

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, founder of the Protocol School of Texas, commented on the situation, emphasizing that flight attendants are primarily responsible for passenger safety and service, not baggage handling. "They're customer service providers," Gottsman said. "They want to make your travel comfortable and safe. They're not baggage handlers."

Gottsman also noted that airline policies and union rules can restrict flight attendants from lifting heavy bags due to potential safety and injury concerns. She added that the flight attendant did offer an alternative by suggesting the bag be checked.

While acknowledging that fellow passengers often assist pregnant travelers, Gottsman advised against assuming such help will always be available. "If you cannot lift your bags, then you should politely [ask] another passenger," she stated, adding that when a passenger does offer assistance, it should be considered an "act of kindness and generosity."

For travelers who anticipate difficulty lifting their own carry-on luggage, Gottsman recommended checking those bags as a more reliable alternative.

The incident has drawn varied reactions online. Some commenters echoed Gottsman's view that lifting bags is not a primary duty of flight attendants. Others shared experiences of flight attendants voluntarily assisting passengers, even without being asked, particularly when they observe someone struggling.

Elissa's team was contacted by Fox News Digital for further details on the incident.
