Influencer's Carrot-Washing Method Sparks Online Outrage
A lifestyle influencer's unusual method for cleaning garden vegetables has drawn widespread criticism and disbelief from social media users.
Heather Barnes, a lifestyle influencer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, has ignited a firestorm online after sharing a video demonstrating her method for cleaning carrots: using a washing machine. Barnes, who operates the Instagram account Our Barnes Yard and has amassed 300,000 followers, posted the unconventional 'food hack' to her social media platforms.
In the video, Barnes described her technique as 'kinda unhinged' but encouraged her followers to trust her process. She poured soil-covered carrots directly into the washing machine drum, setting the appliance to a delicate wash cycle with cold water and no spin. "Then I just let them tumble around," Barnes explained in the clip, later showing the clean vegetables emerging from the machine.
She advised running the washing machine empty with a rinse cycle afterward to prepare it for regular laundry use. Barnes also included a disclaimer in the caption, stating, "For legal purposes: use your washing machine for its intended purposes only; I take no responsibility if this goes sideways for you lol. This is just what I do with my free will! No scrubbing my carrots all winter long."
The video quickly drew a strong negative reaction in the comments section. Many users expressed shock and disbelief, with one commenter writing, "What the actual f***? Are we being for real?" Another urged, "Stop it right now!" Some users expressed concerns about potential contamination, with one joking, "You can't convince me those carrots won't taste like Tide Pods."
Following the backlash, Barnes addressed the controversy on her Instagram Story, apologizing if the video caused distress. "The people of the internet are very troubled with the carrot video. I'm very sorry about that," she stated. Barnes clarified that her intention was not to create 'rage bait' but simply to share her personal routine. "This is just my life. This is how I live normally. I do not rage bait people on purpose," she added, suggesting viewers take deep breaths if they felt provoked.
Experts, however, strongly advise against cleaning produce in a washing machine, citing risks associated with toxic chemicals and hidden bacteria that could contaminate the food and the appliance.
