Christy Collins, a content creator, was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery after a seemingly minor ingrown hair on her bikini line escalated into a life-threatening case of sepsis. The incident began on August 9, when Collins, 28, noticed a small lump that she initially mistook for a boil.

Over the next few days, the lump rapidly grew, described by Collins as becoming "the size of an iPhone 16 Pro Max." She experienced increasing pain, swelling, and a general decline in her health, including lightheadedness and blurred vision. Despite seeking medical advice and being prescribed antibiotics, her condition worsened, making it difficult to walk and causing the affected area to become hot to the touch.

It was only when a concerned friend urged her to seek immediate hospital care that the severity of her infection was recognized. Doctors diagnosed Collins with sepsis, a dangerous condition where the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues. They informed her that delaying treatment by even another day could have been fatal.

Collins recounted the ordeal, stating, "The thought that shaving could have killed me is horrible." She explained that after squeezing the initial lump, it developed into a large cyst extending from her bikini line to her buttock. The situation became critical when she experienced vision and hearing loss, prompting her to return home. The following day, her symptoms intensified, and she struggled to stand.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Collins' infection markers and blood pressure were critically high. She underwent a one-hour surgery to remove the infected tissue. "My friend saved my life," Collins stated, expressing gratitude for her intervention. The surgery left her with a significant wound, approximately two inches deep and five inches wide, which is being left open to heal from the inside out. She is currently on antibiotics and requires daily dressing changes at her GP surgery.

Collins described the impact on her daily life, noting her loss of independence. "My mom is having to shower me, and I need help to go to the toilet. I’ve lost my independence at 28," she said, emphasizing her reliance on her mother for basic care.

Now recovering, Collins is urging others to be vigilant about ingrown hairs, particularly in the bikini area. "I’ve always shaved my bikini line, and ingrown hairs are so common," she noted. "You have to be so careful." She added that a nurse at the hospital advised her to never shave her bikini line, deeming it "not safe."
