Influencer Criticized for Climbing into Zoo Enclosure for Hats
Social media users question a mother's decision to enter an animal enclosure at Taronga Zoo after a dispute over children's hats.
A mother, identified as influencer Diana Lewes, has faced online criticism for claiming she climbed into an animal enclosure at Sydney's Taronga Zoo to retrieve her children's hats. The incident reportedly occurred after a confrontation with another mother.
Lewes shared her account on Instagram, detailing a playground dispute that escalated when the other mother allegedly threw the children's hats into a nearby enclosure. Lewes admitted to climbing over a fence into the enclosure, stating she had "no idea" what animal was inside and that she was not supposed to be there.
Her narrative, intended as a parenting anecdote, drew sharp reactions from social media users. Many questioned why she did not seek assistance from zoo staff. One commenter, identifying as a zookeeper, warned about the dangers of entering animal enclosures, stating it puts both the visitor and the animals at risk. Another user commented, "So your kids could have lost their mother for a couple hats."
Lewes described the initial confrontation, claiming the other mother accused her of paying more attention to her phone than her children. The dispute intensified when the hats landed near a pram. Lewes stated she then entered the enclosure to retrieve the hats, walking out "like this was a perfectly normal Thursday afternoon."
Despite her assertion that "No animals were harmed" and the children survived, Lewes's decision to enter the enclosure, regardless of the animal, has been met with skepticism and disapproval online. She did not specify which enclosure she entered or what animals were present.
