Gianni Infantino will continue as FIFA president after receiving the endorsement of senior executives during a meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday. The gathering was convened by Infantino at FIFA's Africa office in response to significant criticism regarding a proposed plan to sell off commercial and event operations to private investors.
European football's governing body, UEFA, had previously stated it had lost confidence in Infantino, describing the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal as a "shabby, back room, opaque deal." Criticism also emerged from within FIFA itself, including from Secretary General Mattias Grofstrom, who was present at the meeting. In an internal memo sent to FIFA staff on Tuesday, Grofstrom characterized the situation as "a sad and reproachable series of events."
Despite these criticisms, a statement released after the meeting indicated that Grofstrom and the management board "reaffirmed their full support" for Infantino's presidency. Further details were expected to follow.
