Infantino Secures Key Asian Support for FIFA Presidency Re-election

Gianni Infantino's bid for re-election as FIFA president has received a significant boost with an endorsement from the head of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa declared the AFC's "full commitment" to supporting Infantino as he seeks a new mandate during the confederation's Congress in Tokyo.

This backing represents a notable shift, as Sheikh Salman was part of a joint letter with the heads of UEFA and CONCACAF just two months prior, criticizing Infantino. At that time, the three confederations accused him of breaking trust "through deception" over a proposed World Cup commercialization plan, deeming it a "profound failure of judgment."

However, Sheikh Salman indicated it was time to "move forward," stating, "I know your feeling and I think your commitment is clear as well. Your support to Gianni is very clear." He added, "As one Asian family, we are ready to move forward, united in your support, Gianni."

Infantino's power base in Africa and South America, combined with this support from Asia, could be crucial in securing a fourth and final term. The AFC president's endorsement appears to counter a potential rebellion against Infantino.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March in Rabat. UEFA will contribute 55 votes, Africa 54, Asia 46, CONCACAF 35, Oceania 11, and CONMEBOL 10.

The deadline for candidates to declare their intention to challenge Infantino is November 18. Thus far, no other candidates have officially filed, and Infantino could potentially stand unopposed. Prominent figures like Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF, and UEFA chief Aleksander Čeferin have indicated they will not be contenders.

Infantino addressed the AFC delegates, praising Sheikh Salman's work over the past 13 years and assuring him of FIFA's partnership. Responding to questions about Sheikh Salman's comments, Infantino expressed his positive feelings about the AFC's support.

Earlier, at a FIFA Council meeting, Infantino apologized for his World Cup sell-off plan without offering a full explanation of its origins. He also proposed an increase of $3.4 billion in funding for global football development. UEFA has since requested FIFA release relevant documents and provide answers regarding its governance and decision-making processes by November 2.
