IndyCar champion Alex Palou described his recent visit to the White House and the Oval Office as an "incredible" experience, reflecting on the historic moment ahead of the sport's inaugural race around Washington D.C.'s National Mall. Palou, a Spanish native, was among several NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers who met with President Donald Trump in July 2026.
Palou, who is on track to win his fifth season championship and fourth consecutive title, noted the significance of the visit. "Honestly, that’s the only word that comes to mind. I remember the visit we did a month ago when I got invited to the White House. I was like, ‘Really? For real?’ I was going to be able to go inside and just see how the Oval Office is, and just knowing the history that it has," Palou stated. "I know I’m not from this country, but this country has given me so much. Just the opportunity to be here as an IndyCar driver, a winner, a champion, and to create a family and build a family here in the U.S. It’s been incredible."
During the visit, Palou recalled a lighthearted moment when he was "sprayed with presidential cologne." He described the overall experience as one he will share with his children and grandchildren. Palou, who grew up watching movies featuring the Oval Office and Capitol Hill, expressed his anticipation for racing past these landmarks.
Freedom 250 Grand Prix
The IndyCar drivers are preparing for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, scheduled for August 22-23, 2026, on a 1.7-mile circuit encompassing the National Mall. This event marks the first time an auto race will be held around the historic landmarks, coinciding with America's 250th anniversary celebrations. Palou noted that the race is expected to be strategic, with potential for significant lead changes.
Palou, 29, has had a dominant season, leading the standings with 542 points, significantly ahead of second-place driver Kyle Kirkwood. In 14 starts this season, Palou has secured six wins, 11 top-five finishes, and 12 top-10 finishes. His performance echoes the championship success of Sebastien Bourdais, who also won four consecutive titles from 2004-2007.
