Individuals Turn to Gig Economy Apps for Supplemental Income

Many individuals are increasingly turning to digital platforms and apps to supplement their income through what are commonly known as 'side hustles.' These services often involve performing small jobs or tasks for others in their local communities.

Alison Goldsmith, for example, reported earning £250 in a single day by assisting neighbors with various tasks. Her work, facilitated through an app, demonstrates a growing trend of individuals leveraging these platforms for flexible earning opportunities. Goldsmith utilizes apps that connect 'Taskers' with clients needing jobs done, a model that has seen significant user engagement.

One such platform, AirTasker, has experienced substantial growth, with 191,000 users signing up to post tasks and 89,000 Taskers registering to complete them in the past 12 months. This indicates a broad interest in both offering and seeking services through such applications.

Goldsmith shared that she began using AirTasker a couple of years ago while caring for her father. She found the flexibility and spontaneity of the work appealing, especially given the challenges of balancing her previous work commitments with her caregiving responsibilities. The variety of tasks available also contributed to her satisfaction with the platform.

The appeal of these apps lies in their ability to provide flexible work arrangements, allowing individuals to earn money on their own schedules. This adaptability makes them an attractive option for those looking to increase their earnings without committing to traditional employment structures.
