Hannah Zweig, a 21-year-old life skills teacher at John Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana, and her 18-year-old disabled brother, Yosef, died Monday in Lake Michigan. The school described the incident as a "tragic accident," and authorities have not yet released specific details about how the drowning occurred.

Zweig, who was named "Rookie Teacher of the Year" just months prior to her death, was noted for her dedication to her students, particularly those with special needs. Her principal, Jim Seitz, recalled her eagerness to help children with disabilities when she first applied for a teaching position. He described her as compassionate and someone who made learning a cornerstone of her life, fostering positive relationships and helping students build confidence.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Zweig graduated in 2023 with a bachelor's degree and was pursuing a master's degree in special education and teaching. She had previously expressed that her first year of teaching was both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing the importance of connections and the lasting impact of small moments.

Journalist Joshua Short, who had previously interviewed Zweig after she received her teaching award, shared that her passion for advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities was immediately apparent. He also highlighted the deep bond between Hannah and Yosef, describing him as her best friend and noting that she was his biggest advocate.

Short expressed his condolences to Zweig's family and students, finding solace in the thought that she was with her brother, whom she deeply loved. The school is providing counselors and support staff for students affected by the loss.
