Hannah Zweig, a 21-year-old life skills teacher at John Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana, and her 18-year-old brother, Yosef, died in a drowning accident in Lake Michigan. The incident occurred during a family trip.
Zweig had been named "Rookie Teacher of the Year" in April at the South Bend Community Schools' Teacher of the Year Celebration. According to reports, her brother Yosef was developmentally disabled.
John Adams Principal James Seitz confirmed Zweig's death, describing her as a dedicated educator who worked tirelessly and built positive relationships with her students. He recalled her compassion for young people, particularly those with special needs, noting that she reached out to him about a teaching position while still completing her bachelor's degree.
Zweig graduated with a bachelor's degree from Excelsior University in 2023 and was pursuing a master's degree in special education and teaching at Grand Canyon University. She described her first year of teaching as both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing that success is measured by connections built and confidence created, not solely by academic progress.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning have not been publicly revealed.
