Indiana Secures Overtime Victory Over Minnesota After Wild 19-Second Field Goal Exchange

Indiana secured its eighth win of the season against Minnesota on Saturday, prevailing in overtime after a frenetic 19-second span in the fourth quarter saw both teams connect on 60-yard field goals.

With 19 seconds remaining in regulation and the game tied, Minnesota kicker Luke Drzewiecki put the Golden Gophers ahead, 16-13, with a 60-yard field goal. In the ensuing seconds, Indiana's backup quarterback Grant Wilson completed a 33-yard pass to Charlie Becker, setting up kicker Paddy McAteer for his own 60-yard attempt. McAteer's successful kick sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Wilson again found Becker on the first play, and Indiana's defense then held Minnesota, sealing the victory.

“This is entertainment, so I thought we’d bring some entertainment to this game,” Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti said. “Minnesota played great, and we just made some plays, but this team just finds a way [to win].”

Indiana pulled starting quarterback Josh Hoover after he was hit hard while throwing his second interception of the game. Wilson completed 9 of 17 passes for 156 yards in relief. Becker recorded eight catches for 149 yards, including the decisive touchdown reception in overtime.

Indiana kicker Paddy McAteer (35) kicks a 60-yard field goal during a game against Minnesota.

“They made some big-time plays, and we did everything we could to put ourselves in position to win,” said Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck. “But our kids never blink, never back down. We expected to win this game. That’s a hurt locker room in there.”

The game marked the second time in Big Ten history that multiple field goals of 60-plus yards were made in a single season.
