Indiana Lawmaker Resigns Amid Shoplifting Allegations, Cites Cognitive Decline
State Senator Ron Alting to step down following reports of alleged thefts from Walmart stores.
Indiana State Senator Ron Alting announced his resignation following allegations of shoplifting from multiple Walmart locations. Alting, a Republican representing parts of Tippecanoe and Carroll counties, attributed his actions to a decline in his cognitive functioning.
In a Facebook post, Alting stated he has been undergoing extensive medical evaluations for changes in his judgment, behavior, and cognitive functioning. These evaluations include specialists in neurology, geriatrics, and mental health, along with imaging and other tests. He indicated that doctors are continuing their work to reach a definitive diagnosis.
The lawmaker was reportedly caught taking items from Walmart stores in Lafayette and Monticello, Indiana, as well as in Naples, Florida. Although Alting has not been criminally charged, prosecutors in Elkhart County have been assigned to investigate the theft reports.
Alting, who has served for nearly three decades, revealed his intention to resign should he be re-elected. Indiana Republican Party officials confirmed his plan to step aside. If re-elected, the Indiana Republican Party will select his replacement through the state's vacancy process.
Tracy Brown, chairman of the Tippecanoe County Republican Party, expressed understanding for Alting's decision, stating it was likely given the circumstances. Alting's campaign account reportedly holds over $253,000, which, according to state law, can be dispersed to other candidates or nonprofit organizations without a specific timeline if he is no longer in office.
