Netflix's new Telugu-language comedy series, 'Super Subbu,' explores the challenges of introducing sex education in a deeply traditional Indian village. The show follows Subramanyam “Subbu” Chillukuri Rao, a temporary computer lab instructor who is thrust into the role of sex educator.

Subbu finds himself in this predicament after an incident in the computer lab involving students watching inappropriate content on the main computer. To avoid repercussions from his stern, former-headmaster father, Kukkuteshwar Rao, Subbu reluctantly agrees to teach sex education in the remote village of Maakipur.

The premise is immediately set with a dramatic opening scene depicting a sex education teacher being attacked by an angry mob carrying torches and tied to a tree for attempting to teach the subject. The series highlights the strong resistance from village parents who are deeply intolerant of their children learning about sex and reproduction.

Subbu, portrayed by Sundeep Kishan, is depicted as a 32-year-old virgin who intends to save himself for marriage. He is under pressure from his father, Kukkuteshwar Rao (Murali Sharma), to secure a permanent teaching position before his potential marriage to his arranged fiancée, Divya (Maanasa Choudhary), can be approved. Subbu's father is a traditionalist who disapproves of government mandates pushing sex education in schools, as evidenced by his reaction to a condom advertisement on television.

The series, created by Mallik Ram, draws parallels to the film 'English Teacher' but relocates the narrative to a more conservative Indian village setting. The humor often stems from Subbu's awkwardness and his struggle to navigate his father's strict authority and the village's ingrained traditionalism.

'Super Subbu' aims to present a humorous yet insightful look at the complexities of cultural change and the societal taboos surrounding sex education. The show questions how a mandated subject like sex education can be taught when faced with such strong opposition, particularly in communities where topics like consent, reproduction, and contraception are considered controversial.

Kishan's performance as Subbu is noted for its blend of haplessness and earnestness, as he is forced into a role he is ill-equipped for. Sharma is recognized for his authoritative portrayal of Kukkuteshwar Rao. The series reportedly contains minimal explicit content, focusing instead on suggestive Bollywood scenes and visual aids like condom packaging and diagrams of the reproductive system.
