Brian Bengs, an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate in South Dakota, is challenging incumbent Senator Mike Rounds, citing concerns over lobbying practices, personal ambition overriding common sense, and the influence of large financial contributors.

Bengs, a retired military prosecutor, Air Force Academy instructor, and former park ranger, argues that the political system is too heavily influenced by "Big Money." He states that his core platform is to "put South Dakota first" and collaborate with anyone in the interest of the state. Bengs has announced that his first legislative priority, if elected, would be to outlaw all lobbying by congressional staff. His second proposed bill would introduce term limits for members of Congress.

Bengs specifically pointed to a recent report that Senator Rounds' top adviser, who earns a six-figure taxpayer-funded salary, simultaneously works as a lobbyist for Meta. This individual, also a former campaign manager for Rounds, has reportedly been advocating for corporate interests in South Dakota while advising the senator on related issues.

Further criticism from Bengs targets Senator Rounds' spending habits, citing a report indicating that Rounds spends more taxpayer money on private jets than any other U.S. senator. Bengs also raised concerns about economic policies, including tariffs that he claims are hurting South Dakota's manufacturing and agriculture sectors, and legislation that he says allows grocery stores to avoid labeling the origin of meat products.

Bengs has expressed respect for Rounds as a person but sharply criticized his voting record. He stated that Rounds has voted in favor of the Iran war and supported tariffs that he believes harm the state's economy. Bengs also noted that Rounds voted for healthcare cuts that he argues were made to benefit companies seeking tax breaks for data centers, and that Rounds has accepted significant campaign contributions from data center-tied interests.

While identifying as an independent, Bengs stated he is not running to be either an anti-Trump or pro-Trump senator. He expressed strong disagreements with progressive policies, particularly concerns about young people leaning towards socialism, and criticized proposals to "defund the police" and "abolish prisons." Bengs also found President Joe Biden's handling of border security to be unacceptable.

Bengs, who served in the Navy and Air Force, emphasized his background in ethics advisory roles within the Air Force, stating his commitment to standing against a corrupt system. He aims to bring a focus on South Dakota's interests to the Senate.
