Independent Review Launched Into Murder of Henry Nowak
Home Secretary announces review into the death of 18-year-old student following controversy over police bodycam footage.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced an independent review into the murder of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed in Southampton in December. The review will examine the circumstances surrounding the case, including what was known about the perpetrator and potential missed opportunities for intervention.
The stabbing occurred in December, and the perpetrator, Vickrum Digwa, was convicted of murder. Digwa had falsely claimed racial abuse and self-defense. He was sentenced on June 1 to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years.
Following Nowak's death, footage from police bodycams showing the student handcuffed while he was dying drew significant attention. This led to scrutiny of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and sparked broader discussions on knife crime legislation, race, policing practices, and public trust.
Alex Chalk KC, former Lord Chancellor, will lead the independent review. "We must get to the truth of what happened before, during and after that awful night and we must do everything in our power to ensure that no family suffers the same fate," Mahmood stated in the House of Commons.
The review will specifically investigate the knowledge authorities had regarding Nowak's killer and assess whether there were missed opportunities to intervene. It will also examine how Nowak's family was treated in the aftermath of his death.
