Australian Federal MP Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in what authorities are investigating as a targeted attack, prompting a counter-terrorism probe.
Independent federal Member of Parliament Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., is being investigated by counter-terrorism authorities.
Haines, 65, was reportedly retrieving items from the boot of her car when she was hit by a white Toyota Landcruiser. Witnesses described the vehicle making a U-turn and deliberately aiming at the MP. She sustained severe lower body injuries and was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital, where concerns exist about the potential loss of a leg.
A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee was arrested at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. While no motive has been confirmed, the area is known for its association with anti-authority movements.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that counter-terrorism units and ASIO are involved in the investigation, stating that the act appeared deliberate. "This wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear," Albanese told ABC's 7.30. He also expressed hope for positive news regarding Haines' condition.
Acting Victoria Police Superintendent Ashley Mason stated that Haines' injuries were critical but that there was no ongoing threat to the community. The arrested man was reportedly known to police.
Politicians from across the political spectrum have offered messages of support for Haines. Greens leader David Shoebridge, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, Victorian Premier Ben Carroll, and state Liberal counterpart Jess Wilson have all sent well wishes. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also conveyed his prayers for Haines.
Hans on took to social media to condemn the violence, writing, "I am horrified and saddened that Helen Haines has been seriously injured in an attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta today. My thoughts are with Helen, her family and her staff. I wish her a full and speedy recovery, and I know Australians everywhere are wishing the same."
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted that in 2024 there had been 951 reports of harassing and threatening behavior against politicians, a figure that rose to 1,067 in the previous year. Fellow independent MP Allegra Spender commented on a growing sense of anxiety among politicians, stating, "I think we've seen an increase in violent language, and also some of the actions, jostling and other kinds of actions against politicians." Haines' family released a statement thanking first responders and requesting privacy during the investigation.
