Preliminary results from an independent autopsy of 18-year-old Nolan Wells have been released, with officials stating the cause and manner of death are "undetermined pending investigation." The results were shared by famed civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Wells' parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, who had the body transported to Washington, D.C. for an independent examination.

At a press conference held during the annual NAACP National Convention in Chicago on July 22, Dr. Roger Mitchell, President of the National Medical Association, presented the findings. Mitchell stated that while the death is undetermined, he "cannot rule out if any intervening non-accidental factors contributed to or caused the death of Nolan Wells."
