Inde Navarrette Roasts Shane Gillis Over Gym Attire Joke in SNL Monologue
The 'Obsession' star playfully referenced comedian Shane Gillis's controversial comments about women's workout clothing.
Inde Navarrette, star of "Obsession," directly addressed comedian Shane Gillis's controversial remarks about women's gym attire during her opening monologue on "Saturday Night Live." Navarrette's jab came as she discussed preparing for an upcoming Marvel role.
"I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m going to be in a Marvel movie," Navarrette told the audience. "And I know it’s really important for Marvel that you get really fit, so I’ve been working out a lot."
She continued, "So, every morning I put on my little whore outfit and I hit the gym," a line that drew applause. This was a direct callback to Gillis's October 10th "SNL" monologue, where he made crude comments about women's workout clothing.
At the time, Gillis, who hosted the show, had joked, "Also, I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?" He also commented on women wearing tight shorts and expressed discomfort with being discouraged from staring at them, particularly when they might be recording themselves for social media.
Gillis's remarks had previously drawn criticism from figures such as "Schitt’s Creek" star Dan Levy and former "SNL" cast members Ego Nwodim and Cecily Strong. Levy had stated that women wearing revealing gym clothes does not make them "whores," but rather men who label them as such are "misogynists."
Navarrette also touched on her role in "Obsession" during her monologue, joking about the perceived similarities between herself and her character Nikki. The actress stated she was unlike her character, highlighting her seemingly relaxed relationship with her boyfriend, Nick Aiello. However, the monologue featured a comedic moment when Aiello, in the audience, was shown tied up and gagged.
Navarrette, who is slated to portray Rogue in an upcoming "X-Men" film, made her hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live" during its Halloween episode, with Gracie Abrams serving as the musical guest. Representatives for Gillis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
