The gunman who killed three people at an In-N-Out Burger in Idaho was impeached as a student senator during his college years, according to a former classmate. Chad Williams, 24, opened fire at the restaurant on Saturday, hitting ten people before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Williams was pursuing a degree in nursing at the College of Southern Idaho with aspirations of a healthcare career and also served as a student senator.
In February 2023, Williams was impeached from his student senator position due to a lack of engagement and ultimately left the school without earning a degree after two years, a former classmate told The Arizona Republic. Elijah Moseley, who was a classmate and participated in student government with Williams, described him as introverted and someone who did not seek a lot of attention.
Moseley recalled Williams as an encouraging friend who smiled often. However, Moseley noted that Williams became less involved and attended fewer meetings, which led to his impeachment. The scholarship associated with the role required holding office hours, attending meetings, and helping plan events.
The Twin Falls Police Department stated that investigators are confident Williams acted alone, but a motive for the attack remains unclear. Williams had reportedly posted on X with right-wing sentiments, expressing concerns about crime, gun rights, and immigration enforcement.
Among the three fatalities was a restaurant employee, In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder confirmed in a statement. Seven other individuals sustained injuries, with two released from the hospital and three remaining in stable condition, while two were in critical condition.
An off-duty state trooper and a civilian, identified as Jordan Salinas, confronted Williams, which authorities believe helped prevent further casualties. Police Chief Kyle Hicks commended their actions, stating their intervention likely drove the suspect away from the scene. Witnesses described seeing Salinas, a healthcare worker and caregiver, firing at Williams, distracting him and allowing others to escape.
Williams' family is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
