Imperial College London has been named the top university in a new institutional league table, according to an analysis by the Daily Mail. However, the study highlights that excellence in specific academic fields is widely distributed, with 38 other institutions topping subject-specific rankings.
The analysis, which utilizes data from the Graduate Outcomes Survey and the National Student Survey, emphasizes how effectively courses prepare graduates for high-skilled employment. This factor accounts for 40% of the subject table scores, reflecting the current challenging job market for graduates. An additional 20% is based on how students feel their careers are progressing 15 months after graduation.
The remaining 40% of the subject rankings is determined by student ratings of teaching quality, support, and overall student experience.
Imperial College London also leads in the most subject tables, topping seven areas including biology, computer science, and medicine. In contrast, St Andrews, which previously had the most subject wins, does not lead any subject tables in this year's ranking. Oxford University ranks highly in several subject areas, including African and modern Middle Eastern studies, archaeology, chemistry, and geography, and is in the top ten for all 16 subjects it appears in.
The university rankings show that subject excellence is not solely concentrated in the highest-ranked overall institutions. For example, Buckinghamshire New University, which is at the lower end of the overall ranking, secured the top position in the social work subject table. Similarly, several modern universities established after 1992 achieved first place in specific subject areas. These include Robert Gordon University (electrical and electronic engineering, physiotherapy), Birmingham City University (music), and Middlesex University (law), among others.
Worcester University, recognized as the University of the Year for Graduate Jobs with nearly 80% of its graduates securing high-skilled employment, leads the subject table for counselling, psychotherapy, and occupational therapy. This reflects the university's growing national reputation in healthcare subjects.
All subject rankings are detailed in individual university profiles, allowing prospective students to identify institutions where specific subjects are particularly strong, even if the university's overall ranking is more modest. The full subject rankings are accessible through a university finder tool using a subject dropdown menu.
