Illinois Vet Kills Family in Murder-Suicide
Bryan Schmidt, a veterinarian, shot and killed his parents, son, and girlfriend before taking his own life.
A veterinarian shot and killed his parents, son, and girlfriend in their Mundelein, Illinois, home before committing suicide, according to police. Bryan Schmidt, who managed his family’s now-shuttered cat clinic, was identified as the perpetrator.
The victims were identified as Schmidt's parents, Rebecca Schmidt, 77, and James Schmidt, 80, along with his 22-year-old son, Maclaine Schmidt, and his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Heiser, 37. Authorities discovered the bodies in various rooms of the home.
Schmidt died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. "Multiple suicide notes" were found at the scene and in Schmidt's vehicle. Investigators are currently reviewing a significant amount of evidence but have not yet released a motive for the killings. The incident occurred in a village known for its low crime rate, and police stated they had no prior interactions with the family at that residence.
Authorities estimate the killings took place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Neighbors reportedly mistook the gunshots for fireworks. The discovery was made just before midnight when Schmidt's sister, who lives in California, requested a welfare check after being unable to contact her parents.
The shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident. In Illinois, mental health resources are available for those in need.
