An Illinois mother of three died Sunday evening after jumping into the Des Plaines River to save her 7-year-old son.
Angelina Khalimendik, 31, entered the water at Independence Grove Forest Preserve shortly after 7 p.m. when her son was swept away, according to CBS Chicago. Khalimendik, a resident of Hinsdale, was able to help her son reach another family member before she submerged.
She had taken her three children, including an 11-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son, on the fishing trip while her husband was out of town. Khalimendik was pulled from the river by relatives and bystanders before first responders arrived. CPR was administered, but she had already taken in too much water and was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center.
