Corie A. Walsh, 38, faces three counts of first-degree murder after the incident Tuesday in Frankfort, Illinois. Police responded to the family's $1 million home and found Walsh attempting self-harm. She was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The toddler was also transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The manner of the child's death has not been disclosed by authorities. Three other children were found unharmed at the residence.
Walsh is currently in custody and will be transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility for a detention hearing once she is released from medical care, according to Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis. Chelepis expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy."
Neighbors expressed shock at the events. Resident Carolyn Pappas told NBC Chicago that the case reminded her of Lindsay Clancy, who is on trial in Massachusetts for the murder of her children. "This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community," Pappas said. "You never think it's going to hit so close to home."
