Illinois Mother Charged in Toddler's Death, Husband Remains Supportive
Corie Walsh pleads not guilty to murder charges, with attorneys citing postpartum psychosis as defense.
Corie Walsh, 40, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the death of her two-year-old son, Barrett, who was found hanging in their Frankfort, Illinois, home on September 1. Walsh's attorneys argue she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident and plan to pursue an insanity defense.
Prosecutors allege that Walsh hanged her son from a basement rafter before attempting suicide by slitting her wrists in a bathtub. They also claim she had plotted to poison her husband, Michael Walsh, 44, with a "poisoned drink." Despite these allegations, Michael Walsh is reportedly standing by his wife, with her attorneys stating he is "fully supporting her."
At a recent court hearing, the courthouse was filled with supporters of Corie Walsh, with two rows of loved ones in attendance. Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, stated that Michael Walsh was unable to attend due to work commitments but remains supportive. The judge has scheduled the next pre-trial hearing for November 23.
Walsh's defense team is focusing on her mental state, with Lyon emphasizing that "psychosis is not a choice" and that they are extensively researching the condition. Walsh's attorneys claim she continues to exhibit "overwhelming" psychosis symptoms and is being held without bail.
According to court documents, Walsh became fixated on the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother who also claimed postpartum psychosis when she killed her three children in 2023. On the day of her son's death, Walsh was reportedly discussing Clancy's case in a group chat, sending a message stating, "It's manslaughter. Please help. I'm really freaking out."
The discovery of the tragedy occurred when two of Walsh's other children returned from school and sought help from a neighbor. The neighbor found Walsh in the bathtub attempting to harm herself with a kitchen knife. The neighbor removed Barrett from the rafter, but CPR efforts were unsuccessful. An eight-month-old infant was also found unsupervised in the home.
Walsh allegedly told authorities that she killed Barrett because she believed he was "the devil" and "the anti-Christ." When taken into custody, she exhibited "fixed, dilated eyes" and was described as "unlike her normal self," rambling incoherently and having conflicting accounts of the events. She reportedly believed she had drowned all her children, despite only Barrett having died and none being drowned.
Paramedics noted that Walsh was in and out of consciousness and spoke incoherently, at times reciting fruit names. Her attorneys maintain that she was psychotic and that the case is a tragedy with no winners.
