Illinois Mansion Linked to Kelce Estate Hits Market for $1.75 Million

A historic mansion in Wheaton, Illinois, known as the House of Seven Gables, has been listed for $1.75 million, offering a unique architectural link to the lavish Ohio estate purchased by NFL star Travis Kelce. The Illinois property, constructed in 1897 by architect Jarvis Hunt, shares a design lineage with Kelce's 21,000-square-foot mansion, Moyenage, which was also designed by Hunt for the same original owner.

Jay C. Morse, a Chicago steel magnate, commissioned Hunt to design both properties. Historical accounts suggest Morse intended for his Ohio estate, Moyenage, to be based on his Illinois home. This results in a remarkable visual similarity between the two homes, featuring Hunt's interpretation of Tudor and Jacobean architecture, characterized by brick exteriors, steeply gabled roofs, and prominent chimneys.

While Kelce's Ohio property sits on 3.5 acres overlooking Lake Erie and includes eight bedrooms, a game room, and a home theater, the House of Seven Gables is approximately half its size at 10,000 square feet. However, it retains many original features, including oak paneling, carved woodwork, fireplaces, historic flooring, and beamed ceilings. The three-story Illinois home boasts seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, complemented by modern infrastructure such as zoned heating and air conditioning, and an attached three-car garage.

The Illinois property's lower level is unfinished but features 10-foot ceilings, offering potential for a gym, theater, recreation room, or wine cellar. Zillow records indicate the home was initially listed in June 2025 for $1.995 million, with its asking price subsequently reduced by over 12 percent to the current $1.75 million in September.

The House of Seven Gables has a distinctive history, having served as the Loretto Convent for approximately seven decades. It faced demolition when its surrounding property was redeveloped, but preservation efforts led to its relocation. In 2017, the entire 730-ton structure was moved about 500 feet to a new foundation, a significant engineering feat that involved lifting the building onto a steel framework and transporting it on 21 hydraulic dollies.

The mansion's interiors are noted for their elaborate woodwork, beamed ceilings, grand staircases, leaded glass, and large-scale formal rooms, blending historical grandeur with modern amenities. The property is situated adjacent to Seven Gables Park, a 66.5-acre recreational area featuring sports fields, tennis courts, an ice rink, and walking trails. The home is also located within the Whittier School district, a desirable area known for its charm and convenient access to amenities in downtown Wheaton. The suburb has a notable history of residents, including figures like John and Jim Belushi, Bob Woodward, and Edwin Hubble.
