Illinois Man Charged in Alleged Plot to Target Hindu Temple
Authorities are investigating a potential mass shooting plot that may have targeted a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, Illinois.
A 19-year-old Illinois man, Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting that may have targeted a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area. The Palatine Police Department took Paporakis into custody on Sunday after receiving information from the Mount Prospect Police Department regarding concerning electronic communications from him.
According to authorities, Paporakis had shared a document outlining a plan for a mass shooting, along with images of tactical equipment. During a search of his residence, investigators recovered a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, and a tactical vest containing body armor and a patch associated with white supremacist extremism.
An examination of electronic communications and a document attributed to Paporakis, titled "Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)," revealed statements expressing white supremacist and extremist ideologies, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage. Detectives believe Paporakis may have been planning an attack on Oct. 11, potentially targeting a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, although the specific location remains under investigation.
The Aurora Police Department was notified of the potential threat and subsequently contacted Hindu places of worship in their jurisdiction. Palatine Police Chief William Nord stated that the seriousness of the alleged threat cannot be overstated and credited the swift, coordinated response by local law enforcement and the FBI for the suspect's apprehension. The individual who initially reported the concerning communications was also commended.
Paporakis faces charges including making a terrorist threat, a class X felony, and unlawful possession of a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, a class 3 felony. He appeared in court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him detained. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 30.
The FBI stated its commitment to working with law enforcement partners to dismantle threats driven by radical ideologies. Authorities have indicated that there is no known ongoing threat to the public related to this incident.
