A young couple from Illinois, David Thalman and Franceska Warick, both 20, were found dead Monday off Washington Island in Wisconsin after vanishing during a kayaking trip on Lake Michigan. Their disappearance was reported Saturday, prompting an initial search that transitioned into a recovery mission.

Thalman's body was discovered around 10:55 a.m. Monday, followed shortly by Warick's. The couple was last seen on Lake Michigan near Washington Island, a popular tourist destination. Investigators suspect drowning as the cause of death, though it has not been officially confirmed. Authorities noted the couple may have been without life jackets.

The waters near Washington Island are known for their perilous conditions and have been nicknamed "Death's Door." This five-mile strait, where Lake Michigan and Green Bay converge, has been the site of more than 240 reported shipwrecks due to strong currents and unpredictable winds, according to the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands conservation group.

David Thalman, originally from Dundee, Illinois, was described by his former boss as a promising young professional in real estate with significant career aspirations. He had developed a five-year plan and was known for his dedication, often responding to work messages even while on vacation.

Franceska Warick, from South Elgin, Illinois, was remembered by her family as an aspiring esthetician with a deep love for nature and animals. She was also a dedicated cheerleader for 10 years, earning numerous awards. Her family noted her passion for her studies and her dream of becoming a mother, highlighting her warm and joyful spirit.

A photo shared online on December 21 showed the couple holding hands days before Christmas, indicating they were in a relationship prior to their deaths. The exact duration of their relationship is not specified.
