An illegal immigrant from Mexico with a history of multiple deportations has been charged in connection with the death of a 6-year-old North Carolina girl. Authorities reported that Jaime Santiago Corona was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck with a revoked license when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign on July 3.

The collision occurred in Pitt County, North Carolina, and involved an SUV driven by 35-year-old Kelli Toler, who was traveling with her two children. The impact resulted in the death of her 6-year-old daughter, Calli Toler, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelli Toler and her 4-year-old child sustained serious injuries and were transported to ECU Health Greenville.

According to an online fundraiser for the Toler family, the victims were en route to get lunch before heading to a swimming pool when the crash happened.

Jaime Santiago Corona faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving with a revoked license. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that Corona had illegally reentered the United States three times, which is a felony. Bis also noted that Corona has prior convictions for driving under the influence.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer hold for Corona. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office indicated its cooperation with ICE.

"This tragedy was 100% preventable," Bis said. "Our prayers are with Calli Toler and her family."
