Ilhan Omar's Marriage Certificate Shows Altered Name Entries Amid Federal Probe

Newly revealed documents show U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar repeatedly altering her last name on a marriage certificate filed in 2009 with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Elmi is the subject of allegations that he is Omar's brother and that the marriage was a sham to help him obtain a green card.

The marriage certificate, obtained by the Daily Mail, indicates Omar initially wrote her last name as 'Omar,' then crossed it out to write 'Elmi,' before reverting to 'Omar.' Similar alterations appear on the document for her middle name, 'Abdullahi.'

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, has consistently denied these allegations, characterizing them as a right-wing conspiracy theory. The accusations have resurfaced amid an ongoing federal investigation into her immigration history, launched by the Trump administration. Homeland Security Investigations agents reportedly searched her Washington, D.C., home on October 12 as part of this probe, which focuses on immigration paperwork from when Omar and her family arrived in the U.S. from Somalia in the 1990s. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

The Justice Department has requested a federal judge keep the search warrant application and supporting affidavit sealed, citing potential compromise to the ongoing investigation. No criminal charges have been announced against Omar, who has described the investigation as an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement against a political opponent.

renewed scrutiny and political fallout

John Nagel, the Republican candidate challenging Omar, has publicly called for her to release her immigration records and submit to a DNA test to address the rumors. "It would be very simple if you are innocent to be able to come up with the paperwork, do the DNA sample," Nagel stated in a Fox News interview. "The people that voted for you have a right to know if they can trust you."

Beyond the federal investigation, Elmi, who is a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, published an academic report in August titled 'Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya.' In the introduction, he referred to himself as "a gay man of the East African diaspora" and discussed navigating "tension, risk, intimacy and vulnerability" during his fieldwork.

Even within the Democratic party, some have expressed reservations. Joe Radinovich, a former Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor state representative, suggested that the allegations against Omar are likely true and cautioned against automatic defenses. "Any objective look at the evidence doesn't look... great," Radinovich commented on X, formerly Twitter.

Despite the controversies, major election forecasters continue to rate Omar's seat in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District as safely Democratic. As of October 14, Omar had raised approximately $8.2 million for her election cycle, significantly more than her opponent Nagel's approximately $1.1 million.
