Ilhan Omar's Family Undertook Perilous Journey to Reach America

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar's family undertook a perilous four-day sea voyage on wooden boats to escape Somalia's civil war, a journey that resulted in the deaths of scores of other individuals, according to newly revealed accounts.

This harrowing sea passage was the initial leg of their journey toward America. The details shed new light on aspects of the immigration probe surrounding the congresswoman. Former Kenyan engineer Nurien Hatimy has provided accounts to the Daily Mail, describing how Omar's family was compelled to flee the Somali capital of Mogadishu, which had descended into anarchy.

According to Hatimy, the escape involved a dangerous sea crossing. He recalled that Omar's family was forced to rely on risky sea routes, as land travel was too dangerous. This sea voyage, undertaken in wooden boats, was fraught with peril, and many did not survive.

Omar's family's experiences highlight the extreme measures refugees often take to escape conflict and seek safety. The details of their journey underscore the instability and violence prevalent in Somalia during that period. Many families were displaced and faced dire circumstances in their attempts to find refuge.

Omar's father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who died in 2020, was a significant figure in her early life and immigration to the United States. She has stated that she obtained U.S. citizenship through him. However, records of her or her father's naturalization have not been publicly found.

Omar's family's journey to the U.S. began in the midst of the Somali Civil War, which erupted in 1991. This conflict led to widespread displacement and humanitarian crisis. Many Somalis sought refuge in neighboring countries and beyond, embarking on journeys that often exposed them to significant risks.

The information comes amid ongoing scrutiny and investigations into aspects of Omar's personal life and immigration history. Questions have been raised about her marital history and the immigration status of individuals connected to her family. This includes accusations concerning her marriage to Ahmed Elmi, a British citizen, which occurred in 2009. Political opponents have suggested this marriage may have been solely to facilitate Elmi's entry into the U.S., noting that Elmi is also reported to be her brother. Omar has faced accusations of entering into that marriage for immigration purposes. Her home in Washington, D.C., was reportedly subject to a raid by federal authorities on October 12, with grand jury subpoenas issued to some of her relatives.

Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002 that was not legally recognized. In 2019, she denied claims of splitting from Hirsi after reports surfaced of an affair with a campaign aide. Omar ultimately filed for divorce from Hirsi in 2019. She is pictured with Hirsi and their three children in some provided images.
