Ilhan Omar Posts Defiant Somali Music Video Amid Federal Probe

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., recently posted a music video on X, formerly Twitter, featuring a Somali hip-hop song with lyrics interpreted as defiant and menacing, surfacing days after federal agents raided her Washington D.C. home in connection with an investigation into immigration fraud. The song's lyrics, translated from Somali, include lines such as "No enemy dares threaten me, wherever I step, they scatter," and "I have always been the source of their distress."

The video, which Omar posted at the end of last week, shows her and her husband, Tim Mynett, walking on a dock by a lake with fall foliage. The accompanying song, "Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya," by Ilkacase Qays, is described in a cultural analysis as a "powerful example of Somali lyrical poetry built around pride, bravery, personal dignity and unwavering trust in Allah." Other translated lyrics state, "If the just one had felt anger on my behalf, would he not have crushed the enemy underfoot?" and "With the strength the almighty has given me, If I draw on it late in the afternoon, by evening, I will have taught you a lesson."

The post was made shortly after Omar returned to Minnesota following a nearly two-week absence from public view. This period followed an Oct. 12 raid on her Washington D.C. home by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents. During the raid, agents reportedly confiscated Omar's passport and cell phone. Her sister, Sahra Noor, has been interviewed by federal investigators, and agents have reportedly obtained Omar's DNA.

Omar is reportedly being investigated for potential fraud related to immigration paperwork submitted when she became a U.S. citizen. If immigration fraud is proven, she could face denaturalization and deportation, according to former Border Patrol Chief Tom Homan. Omar cast an early ballot alongside Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Friday and later appeared at the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minneapolis, where she interacted with members of the Somali community.

Omar has restricted who can comment directly on her social media post. The only publicly visible comment was from former U.S. House member Cori Bush, who responded, "We love this."
