Ilhan Omar jokes about media fixation on looks during event with controversial streamer

Embattled Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) joked that the media is fixated on her because of her "good" looks during a pre-event conversation with streamer Hasan Piker. The congresswoman made the remark on Piker's livestream Monday, shortly before they appeared together at an event hosted by Minnesota state lawmaker Omar Fateh.

"We just look really good on their screens," Omar told Piker when he commented on the media's tendency to highlight their activities. The conversation took place in the green room before they took the stage for the event, described as the inaugural episode of Fateh's "I'm The Host Now!" series.

Omar, who was born in Somalia, and Fateh, who is Somali-American, were participating in the event when it drew widespread condemnation from Republicans and Jewish groups. Critics highlighted Piker's past controversial statements, including remarks suggesting "America deserved 9/11" and that he would "vote for Hamas over Israel every single time."

John Nagel, Omar's Republican opponent in her midterm election race, criticized the appearance, stating, "This is not outreach. It is the normalization of antisemitism, support for terrorists and contempt for America." He urged prominent Minnesota Democrats to disavow Omar's association with Piker.

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) issued a statement expressing dismay, calling Omar's decision to share a stage with Piker "a betrayal of Jewish Minnesotans and harmful to the broader public." The JCRC further stated that Piker's rhetoric "dehumanizes Jews and shifts responsibility for antisemitic violence onto its potential victims" and deserves "unequivocal condemnation."

Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth criticized the event as the Democrats' "closing message to voters," questioning why "Democrat leaders invited a vile anti-American left-wing radical to Minnesota ... a week before the election."
