Ilhan Omar Fundraises Off DHS Raid of Her Home, Calls Investigation 'Ludicrous'
The congresswoman's campaign emailed supporters Monday night, characterizing the search as an "authoritarian attack" and a "partisan investigation."
Rep. Ilhan Omar's campaign has launched a fundraising effort following a raid on her Washington, D.C. home by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, which the congresswoman described as "ludicrous" and "an authoritarian attack on a political opponent."
The fundraising email, sent Monday night, urged supporters to contribute to help Omar "fight back" against what the campaign called a "partisan investigation."
"Please don’t click away," the email stated. "As many of you now know, Trump’s DHS agents raided Ilhan Omar’s house this morning in a highly unusual move that is being widely condemned as a dangerous and authoritarian attack on a political opponent."
Omar's campaign accused former President Trump of "targeting Ilhan since he first got back into office," denouncing the search as "a serious escalation by this fascist government" and "an attempt to intimidate, silence, and punish Ilhan Omar and our entire progressive movement" ahead of midterm elections.
"We have to be ready for anything that comes our way, and every dollar we can raise goes a long way," the fundraising pitch continued. The campaign asked supporters to "chip in $10 or any amount you can afford today" to "stand with Ilhan as Trump brings the immense power of the federal government down on her."
The raid was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as part of an ongoing criminal fraud probe into the Somalia-born congresswoman's immigration paperwork. In her first public statement after the raid, Omar tweeted that she was "OK" and called the search "an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement." She added, "I will not be silenced."
A spokesperson for Omar maintains that she has "done nothing wrong."
Omar is currently seeking a fifth term in Congress, running against Republican John Nagel in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District.
