U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar is facing significant criticism from within her own party and from Jewish community leaders for participating in a political event with streamer Hasan Piker, who has a history of making controversial and inflammatory statements. The event, aimed at mobilizing young voters, took place in Minneapolis on Monday.
A group of Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor (DFL) state senators, including Senator Ron Latz, issued a statement condemning the decision to platform Piker. They accused him of promoting hateful views and described the event as giving legitimacy to a "nationally known Jew-hater, homophobe and misogynist."
The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas also criticized the event, calling it "a betrayal of Jewish Minnesotans and harmful to the broader public." Piker, a popular online political commentator, has drawn controversy for past remarks concerning Israel, American foreign policy, and the September 11th attacks. In 2019, he stated on a livestream that "America deserved 9/11," though he later apologized for the phrasing.
Republicans have also seized on the appearance. Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth stated, "We do not need violent rhetoric, anti-American rhetoric." Michele Tafoya, a Republican candidate for Senate in Minnesota, expressed her shock, characterizing Piker as "really anti-West, anti-American, anti-Israeli, anti-Semitic."
Omar's office defended her participation, stating the congresswoman was "laser-focused on turning out the vote." The event occurred as Omar is reportedly under federal investigation regarding her immigration history, a probe that escalated earlier this month with agents raiding her Washington, D.C. home. The investigation is reportedly centered on immigration paperwork completed by her late father. Omar has denied allegations of marrying her brother for immigration benefits and has stated she has done nothing wrong.
