Ilhan Omar Dismisses Scrutiny Over Citizenship and Relationships as 'Looking Good'
The congresswoman, facing federal probes and criticism over her associations, joked with a streamer that media attention is due to her on-screen appearance.
Embattled Congresswoman Ilhan Omar responded to ongoing media scrutiny regarding her citizenship and personal relationships by joking that she and others simply "look good" on screen. The Minnesota Democrat made the remark during a conversation with leftist streamer Hasan Piker, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Omar is currently under renewed scrutiny amid a Department of Justice probe into her U.S. citizenship. Federal authorities are reportedly investigating whether her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, altered her age on her citizenship application, potentially allowing her to gain citizenship automatically at age 17 rather than pursuing it as an adult at 18. The investigation also reportedly extends to Omar's marriage history and finances.
Specifically, investigators are examining longstanding allegations, which Omar has denied, that her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was actually her brother. The Department of Justice's reference to Omar as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi" in court filings related to a search of her Washington, D.C., home has also drawn attention. Additionally, her financial filings, particularly those concerning her husband Tim Mynett's business interests, have reportedly been scrutinized and amended.
Federal agents searched Omar's Washington, D.C., residence earlier this month, seizing personal property. The congresswoman stated she was prevented from contacting her attorney for approximately an hour after the search. Following these events, Omar has hired a legal team including attorneys Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz, who have experience representing high-profile clients in investigations involving former President Donald Trump and House Democrats.
President Trump has publicly called for Omar's resignation, alleging she was sworn into office under a false name and referencing the unproven claims about her former husband being her brother. He also criticized Omar's criticisms of the United States, citing her birth country of Somalia.
Omar's appearance with Hasan Piker also drew criticism. Piker has faced backlash for past remarks, including comments such as "America deserved 9/11" and expressing a preference for Hamas over Israel. Omar's Republican opponent, John Nagel, condemned her association with Piker, calling it "the normalization of antisemitism, support for terrorists and contempt for America." The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas also expressed dismay, stating that elevating someone with a history of "antisemitic and hateful rhetoric" is harmful. The Minnesota DFL Party, however, distanced itself from the event, stating it was not DFL-sanctioned and condemning Piker's comments.
