Ilhan Omar Allies With Controversial Streamer Amid Investigations
Rep. Ilhan Omar's campaign trail collaboration with streamer Hasan Piker sparks debate within the Democratic Party, even as the congresswoman faces federal investigations.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., recently joined forces with far-left streamer Hasan Piker for a campaign event in Minnesota, a move that has drawn criticism from within her own party.
Piker, who has faced backlash for past controversial statements, including calling Republicans "terrorists" and the GOP the "pedophile protection party," defended his alliance with Omar. He told Fox News Digital that disagreements within the Democratic Party are "the beauty of democracy."
Omar's decision to campaign with Piker comes amid two federal investigations. One probe concerns alleged immigration fraud, which could impact her political future and citizenship status, while another examines discrepancies in her financial disclosure statements. The congresswoman's Washington, D.C., home was recently raided in connection with these investigations.
Some Minnesota Democrats, including Rep. Angie Craig and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, have publicly condemned Piker's rhetoric. Craig described his comments as "polarizing and dangerous" and called Omar's decision to host the event a "mistake." Klobuchar characterized Piker's past statements as "reckless and unacceptable."
Piker dismissed their concerns, suggesting that Omar was correct to work with him to mobilize his young, progressive voter base. "Angie Craig lost, and I think Klobuchar is going to make for a great governor," he told Fox News Digital when asked about their criticism.
During their joint event, both Omar and Piker criticized former President Donald Trump. Omar decried his "obsession" with Minnesota, while Piker argued against ceding ground on immigration arguments to Trump's agenda.
Piker also defended his stance on Israel and Palestine, stating, "Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism." He added, "I will always fight against anti-semitism and I find all bigotry to be morally repugnant and completely unacceptable. But I also find it a real shame to constantly complain about people who are outspoken on the issue of Israel's genocide."
Omar, a Somali-born congresswoman, is running for reelection and is projected to win, despite the ongoing federal investigations. A recent court filing referred to her by a name that reflected evidence compiled in the immigration fraud probe, a move Omar's campaign has attributed to politically motivated targeting by the Trump administration. She has denied any wrongdoing.
This alliance with Piker echoes a previous controversy involving Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who also faced criticism for campaigning with the streamer earlier in the cycle. El-Sayed reportedly distanced himself from Piker after facing backlash from Democratic leadership.
