IKEA's Iconic Blue Bag Gets Personal Touch, Sparks Shopper Frenzy
Customers line up for hours to customize the beloved FRAKTA bag with their initials as part of a limited-time IKEA event.

Hundreds of shoppers have descended upon IKEA stores across Australia and New Zealand, eager to personalize the company's iconic $1.75 blue FRAKTA bag. The limited-edition personalization event, part of IKEA Open House, allows customers to have up to two initials heat-pressed in the brand's signature yellow felt onto the bag.
The FRAKTA bag, a global icon that has been a staple for over 30 years, has seen immense popularity, with over 680,000 units sold in Australia alone in the last financial year. This promotion marks the first time customers have had the opportunity to add their own personal touch to the cult favorite.
On the first day of the event, shoppers began queuing before stores opened, with significant lines forming at locations like the Tempe store in Sydney. The personalization service is offered free of charge after the purchase of the $1.75 bag. Customers proceed to a dedicated FRAKTA Personalisation Station, where their chosen initials are applied by a heat-press, often while they wait. Each personalized bag also comes with an authentication certificate.
Social media buzzed with excitement as shoppers shared their enthusiasm for the customizable bag. "OMG I need this," and "I'm running to IKEA this weekend," were common sentiments expressed by eager customers.
The personalization event is scheduled to run until Sunday, September 20, with each store offering approximately 900 personalized FRAKTA bags per day. IKEA Communications Manager Patricia Routledge noted the immediate success of the activation, highlighting the "special connection" Australians have with the FRAKTA bag. "It's incredible to see customers lining up before opening to create their own personalized version," she stated. "The FRAKTA has become much more than one of the world's most affordable and high-quality shopping bags. It's a global icon that punches above its weight in usage as millions also embrace it for laundry, moving house and essential storage in everyday life."
The FRAKTA bag, whose name means "to freight" in Swedish, was designed over three decades ago. Its durability and affordability have made it a versatile item used worldwide for storage, carrying, and organization. The bag's cultural impact extends beyond practical use, having inspired high-end fashion designs and becoming a recognized element in streetwear culture. This personalization event follows the successful Hus of FRAKTA pop-up held in London last year, which also saw large crowds eager to obtain a customized version of the bag.
