The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has stated that Palestinian soccer players targeted during military operations in Gaza were allegedly operatives for Hamas and Islamic Jihad, rather than solely athletes. The IDF released these claims in response to what it described as false narratives circulating internationally, alleging that the IDF deliberately targeted innocent soccer players.

According to a statement provided to Fox News Digital, the IDF asserted that a review of intelligence revealed organizational affiliations and operational roles of individuals presented internationally as athletes. The military body stated that these individuals, including players, referees, and coaches, served as terrorists within the military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. The IDF claims that three of these individuals were involved in the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, while others held leadership roles in terror operations.

The IDF stated that such portrayals of targeted individuals as solely civilian professionals, while concealing their alleged involvement in terrorism, are part of a broader campaign against Israel. This campaign, the IDF claims, mirrors efforts where Palestinian terrorists have been presented as journalists or humanitarian aid workers.

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA), led by Jibril Rajoub, has actively lobbied international sports bodies, including FIFA and the International Olympic Committee, seeking Israel's suspension from global competitions. The PFA has cited the number of Palestinian athletes killed and the destruction of sports infrastructure in Gaza as reasons for an indefinite ban.

These efforts culminated at recent FIFA Congresses, where the PFA's demands for Israel's suspension were ultimately rejected by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee after legal reviews. Instead, FIFA imposed a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs (approximately $190,700) on the Israel Football Association (IFA) for unrelated disciplinary breaches. The IFA was also mandated to implement an anti-discrimination prevention plan and display banners promoting anti-discrimination during upcoming matches.

Earlier this month, the PFA reported that approximately 1,009 members of its athletic community had been killed by IDF forces since the conflict began in October 2023, according to Al Jazeera. The IDF's disclosures come amid ongoing diplomatic and public relations efforts within the global sports arena.
