Idaho Surgeon Dies After Collision With Elk on Interstate

Dr. Mark E. Baker, a 66-year-old oral surgeon, died Monday night after his vehicle collided with an elk on Interstate 15 in Pocatello, Idaho. The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. when the animal ran into the roadway.

Baker was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was driving a 2022 BMW Z4.

Dr. Baker had practiced with Oral Surgery Specialists of Idaho in Pocatello for many years. The practice posted a tribute on Instagram, remembering him as a trusted surgeon who showed compassion, kindness, and dedication to his patients. The company also stated he was a respected colleague, mentor, and friend to his team and a physician deeply committed to serving the community.

Wildlife-vehicle collisions involving large animals such as deer and elk result in approximately 200 deaths annually in the United States, according to The Pew Charitable Trusts. Adult male elk can weigh over 700 pounds, and females typically exceed 500 pounds.
