Iconic 'Only Fools and Horses' Van to Be Auctioned for Up to £40,000
The beloved yellow Reliant Regal Supervan III, featured in the early seasons of the BBC sitcom, is expected to fetch a significant sum at auction.
The three-wheeled van, instantly recognizable as Del Boy's transport in the classic BBC sitcom "Only Fools and Horses," is set to go under the hammer next month with an estimated sale price of up to £40,000. The canary yellow Reliant Regal Supervan III, emblazoned with "Trotters Independent Trading Co," was a prominent feature in the first two series of the popular show.
This particular 1972 model, bearing the registration APL 911H, was one of six acquired by the BBC and is notable for its appearance in every episode filmed between 1981 and 1982. Official records confirm its use in the very first episode, "Big Brother," as well as in episodes such as "The Russians Are Coming" and the iconic "A Touch of Glass."
In "A Touch of Glass," the van plays a role in the memorable scene where Del Boy, Rodney, and Grandad attempt to clean a valuable chandelier, only for it to be smashed, leading to a hasty escape in the van.
Decades after its on-screen appearances, the van is being offered for sale with props from the show, including a replica Harrison watch and a novelty £6.2 million cheque. The vehicle has undergone restoration to its former glory, with recent mechanical work addressing the carburettor, brake cylinders, and battery, along with attention to the fuel system. It has accumulated approximately 97,000 miles.
Currently held by a private collector, the Reliant van will be featured in Iconic Auctioneers' Classic Sale in November, with expectations that it will achieve a price between £30,000 and £40,000. The restoration efforts included new tires and brakes, a grey-primer bonnet hatch, bumpers, wings, and red-painted door interiors.
Experts acknowledge the van's status as a beloved TV vehicle, irrespective of its unconventional appearance. Gary Dunne, Sales Manager at Iconic Auctioneers, commented on the van's immediate recognizability and its special connection to the early years of "Only Fools and Horses."
The Classic Sale is scheduled to take place at the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham on November 15.
